SURVEY RESULTS ARE IN
With the members’ mandate for change in the October 2011 Officers’ election, the newly elected AFSCME 3299 Executive Board voted to draft a blueprint for building a stronger, more unified union. We asked each of you to fill out a survey to give us your own feedback on your priorities for change: the Board took this input and drafted a Strategic Plan to accomplish 5 main goals based on Members’ ideas:
SURVEY SAYS: Members Want a Stronger Union that is Better Able to Fight UC
GOAL #1: BUILD THE MAT (Member Action Team)
A strong MAT (Member leader) structure is the glue of our union; it keeps members organized, informed and standing strong.
› STEPS TO GET THERE: 1:10 (Recruit 1 MAT Leader for 10 members in every department), Local Steering Committees to help develop MAT structure, clear rights and responsibilities for MATS
› MEMBERS ROLE: WE must support the MAT in their department and take action when asked — it will take all of us, not just MATs to win what we deserve.
SURVEY SAYS: Members Want Better Communication with the Union
GOAL #2: BETTER COMMUNCIATIONS
Informed members can see through UC’s spin.
› STEPS TO GET THERE: Organizers increase their visibility in workplace; regular MAT & membership meetings; develop comprehensive plan to reach every member quickly
› MEMBERS ROLE: WE need to attend meetings, stay informed, get on the email/text list, keep our contact info current, and ask their MAT leader and organizer for the latest information from the union.
SURVEY SAYS: Members Want Education and Training
GOAL #3: EDUCATION & TRAINING FOR MEMBERS & UNION STAFF
With an informed and powerful membership, we’ll have the power to defend our rights on the job.
› STEPS TO GET THERE: Training at every membership and MAT meeting (Contract enforcement, Union Rights 101, Organizing, Labor Laws, How to represent co-workers), develop comprehensive education training program for MATs/Stewads, Staff & Officers.
› MEMBERS ROLE: We must attend trainings and be willing to learn!
SURVEY SAYS: Members Want More Accountability and Visibility
GOAL #4: ACCOUNTABILITY & VISIBILITY
A transparent, accountable union builds trust; our unity and power at work depends on it.
› STEPS TO GET THERE: Clear roles and responsibilities for staff, officers, MATs; consistent MAT & member meetings with reports from the E-Board; regularly scheduled site visits from officers, E-board, MATs, and staff.
› MEMBERS ROLE: WE must be vigilant and hold their the union accountable — but our union’s strength depends on us being involved.
SURVEY SAYS: Members Want Better Contracts
GOAL #5: BETTER CONTRACTS
Better contracts helps us support our families and protects us on the job.
› STEPS TO GET THERE: Push for what UC can afford and don’t settle for less! Build our capacity to win by accomplishing 4 other goals, build strong political support and coalitions w/ other unions and students.
› MEMBERS ROLE: WE must set the priorities through surveys and meetings — and then be ready to back up the bargaining team and do whatever it takes to win.
