Together We're Stronger

READY FOR A RAISE?
THEN STAND UP AND BE COUNTED

Our contracts are expiring soon and negotiations start June 20th. We’re facing the fight of our lives because UC wants to:

  • Keep our wages low
  • Continue to give Executives huge perks
  • Slash our benefits
  • Triple Retiree Healthcare costs
  • Cut In-state enrollment & make UC inaccessible to our families
  • Reduce Sacramento oversight so they can privatize UC
  • Divide our membership, so we can’t fight together
  • Contract-out our jobs

We deserve better. Our families and communities do too. But we have to build our power to fight back and win.

MEMBERSHIP FAQ

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT I BECOME A MEMBER OF THE UNION?

The first thing UC does when they bargain with the Union is look at how many of us are actually members. This tells them how much support the Union has and the more members we have, the more serious UC will bargain with us. If our membership is low, it shows we are disorganized or don’t care & UC will be able to push through their agenda. Becoming a Member is the simplest way to say “I deserve dignified treatment and a raise.”

DUES ARE ALREADY COMING OUT OF MY CHECK, SO I’M A MEMBER, RIGHT?

If you haven’t signed a green membership card yet, then you are not a Member- you’re a “Fair Share Fee Payer”. It is a State of California law that everyone covered by a Union contract at UC pays their fair share for the benefits and representation they receive from being covered by the contract- benefits like affordable health care, wage increases, job security, representation and seniority rights.

DOES IT COST MORE TO BECOME A MEMBER?

No, it doesn’t cost extra to be a member of the Union. Member dues are the same amount as the “Fair Share” fee that you’re paying now, so you won’t see a difference in your paycheck when you become a Member.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MEMBER & A “Fair Share” FEE PAYER?

Not only does becoming a Member of our Union, the UC Employees – AFSCME Local 3299, send UC a message that you care about your job and contract, but you show your co-workers you stand together with them.

The basic idea behind a Union is that we have shared interests and goals with our co-workers: whether you’re a Respiratory Therapist, Cook, LVN or Bus Driver, we all want a better contract with raises, job security and our benefits protected as well as a fair & dignified work environment. Rather than standing alone, we’re a lot stronger when we stand together and take collective action. Our Union puts that wisdom into action.

IS IT TRUE ONLY MEMBERS CAN VOTE?

Yes. Members get a real democratic voice in our Union. We are a Member-run, Member-powered Union built on having a voice both on the job at UC and in our Union. Decisions in our Union are made by Members and Member participation has been the key to our successes and what separates us from many other Unions. Only Members can vote on whether or not we should go on strike, on electing our Union’s leadership- like President, Executive Board and Bargaining Team Representatives, or on accepting or rejecting contracts.

It’s time to UNITE, FIGHT BACK AND WIN!
