Service Steps Problem Resolved, Actions Canceled!
On April 22 our statewide bargaining team met with UC Management to review revised proposals on Steps. After weeks of bargaining and demonstrations, UC has agreed in writing to classification wage grids which guarantee all Service Workers receive the step system we deserve!

Regents Approve Enormous CEO Raises, Still Refusing to Lift Service Workers Out of Poverty
The UC Regents have increased Medical Center CEO and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) salaries up to 34%, and awarded bonuses of up to $89,000. This takes annual compensation to nearly $800,000/year for some CEOs.

Service Workers Host Pancake Breakfast for Yudof
Since UC President Yudof has so far refused to meet with AFSCME workers, this Saturday we invited him to a pancake breakfast outside the Presidential Mansion. Since pancakes are Yudof's favorite food we hoped that Yudof would use the opportunity to engage with us in an informal setting, and try to understand how difficult it is for us to support our families on UC's poverty wages.

Regents Cannot Escape Faces of UC Poverty
At this month's Regents meeting at UC Irvine, AFSCME members showed UC Regents at every turn that they cannot ignore the poverty that is being created by UC's low wages! Regents were confronted by UC Service workers at their hotel, at dinner, and during campus tours, with reminders that our families will continue to suffer every day until they take the action necessary to resolve our contract.

Historic Agreement on Patient Care Sets Pattern for Service!!!
After more than a year of bargaining, our Bargaining Team has arrived at an Agreement for Patient Care. The 5 year contract includes many dramatic improvements, including a guaranteed, longevity based step system and across the board increases, guaranteed statewide minimum wage of $14.50 by the end of the contract, overtime after shift, and much more. This agreement sets the pattern for Service Workers to achieve the same contract, and allows us to focus all our energy on escalating our Service fight!

AFSCME Members Vote Yes, Bargaining Team Calls for Strike!
Thousands of members came out to vote in record numbers last week, voting 96.9% (EX) and 97.5% (SX) to strike to win a fair contract. After meeting with management late last night, our Bargaining Team has called for a strike, and served UC with Strike Notice for June 4th and June 5th.

Detailed Proposals – Strike Authorization Vote
After 10 months of negotiating, we are at impasse with the University and no further talks are scheduled. At this point, our elected bargaining team has called for a strike authorization vote and is unanimously asking us to vote "YES" to authorize the team to call a strike. The team will only call a strike if it determines that a strike is necessary to move UC to agree on a fair contract.

Because UC pay and benefits are so far behind other hospitals and community colleges it is difficult for us recruit and retain the best qualified staff to provide top patient care and student services.

UC Medical Center Executive Raises

  • Medical Center Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) salaries were just increased by up to 39%.
  • Medical Center CEOs and CNOs also received bonuses of up to $83,000 - a one-time payment in addition to any salary increase.
  • At the same time, UC has offered their Patient Care and Service workers salary increases as low as 3% and refused to guarantee any increase at all for thousands of workers.

In spite of favorable financial ratings, the UC Regents have declared a financial emergency allowing the University President to unilaterally impose extraordinary budgetary actions. AFSCME Local 3299 proposes alternative emergency budget measures that protect crucial student and patient care services, while redirecting funds from areas that can most withstand temporary reductions.

  • Credit for years of experience
  • $15/ hour statewide minimum wage
  • $16/hour statewide minimum wage with certification or license.

UC Unions Say NO to Two-Tier Health Coverage
At a stakeholder meeting on July 3, 2007, UC Unions told UC administration we will not accept any of the lower-tier benefit plans, such as the "high-low" plans, which UC is considering for 2008. The unions urged UC to maintain one level of health benefits for all its staff, rather than adding lower-quality, lower-access plans such as the "high-low" plans or the "high-deductible" plans. Present at the meeting were unions representing 70,000 unionized staff at UC.
